अनु आणि अनिल त्यांच्या सव्वा वर्षाच्या लेकीला, अमिताला घेऊन दुसऱ्या वर्गातून गाडीने काश्मीर प्रवासाला निघाले होते. प्रवासासाठी अमिताला पावडरचे दूध द्यावे लागेल म्हणून तो डबा त्यांनी बरोबर घेतला होता. त्यांच्या समोरच्या सीटवर एक चाळीशीच्या पुढचे जोडपे बसले होते. ते अमिताच्या बाललीलांकडे खूप कौतुकाने पाहत होते. एरव्ही अमिता खूप खेळकर आणि प्रवास करण्यासाठी एकदम अनुकूल होती. पण तिला भूक लागली आणि वेळेत दूध मिळालं नाही की ती खूप जोरात रडायची, हात पाय झाडायची. तिच्या बाबांनी तिला घेतलं तर जरा शांत रहायची. तिच्यासाठी त्यांनी थर्मास मध्ये गरम पाणी घेतलं होतं. पण ते संपून जायचं. जेव्हा दूधसाठी पाणी लागायचं तेव्हा अमू तर बाबांना सोडायची नाही. समोरचा पुरुष सहप्रवासी धावत जाऊन पॅन्ट्री मधून गरम पाणी आणायचा.
थोडी ओळख झाल्यावर कळलं की लग्न होऊन पंधरा वर्ष झाली तरी त्यांना मूल झालं नव्हतं. नंतर दोघेही त्यांच्याशी खूप जुनी ओळख असल्याप्रमाणे वागू लागले. अनु त्यांना म्हणाली,
“आपली काहीही ओळखदेख नाही तरी तुम्ही आमच्या अमु साठी धावत जाऊन पाणी आणता. मी बघते ना ती रडू लागली की तुम्ही दोघेही कावरे बावरे होता. तिला ट्रेन मध्ये फिरवता. कमाल आहे तुमची.”
“अहो असं वाटतंय की अमुशीच नाही तर तुमच्या दोघांशी आमचे गतजन्मीचे नातं असावं.”
अनुच्या मनात आलं की आपला दीर पण अमुचे इतके लाड करत नाही. खरंच काही नात्यांना नाव नसते आणि काही नावापुरतीच असतात.
