मीनाताई रोज गावातील सर्व देवळांत सकाळी आठ ते दहा या वेळेत जाऊन यायच्या. गावातील बड्या आसामीची पत्नी. शोफर ड्रिव्हन मर्सिडीज गाडीतून ऐटीत उतरायच्या. देवदर्शन झालं की प्रत्येक देवळाबाहेरील भिकाऱ्याच्या वाडग्यात पैसे टाकायच्या. नियमित येणाऱ्या भाविकांना त्यांच्या ह्या दानशूर वागण्याचं खूप कौतुक वाटायचं. खरं तर श्रीमंती असलेले महाकंजुष असतात असं बहुतेकांना वाटत असतं.

एकदा मीनांताईंचा वाढदिवस होता म्हणून त्यांनी भिकाऱ्यांना डब्यातून काही काढून दिलं. प्रत्येक भिकाऱ्याच्या वाडग्यात पातळ कापलेली पेरूची फोड. त्यांना रोज बघणाऱ्याने हे पाहिलं आणि त्याला खूप आश्चर्य. इतक्या श्रीमंत व्यक्तीचा वाढदिवस किमान एकेक फळ तरी प्रत्येकाला द्यायचं. आता रोज त्या वाडग्यात किती पैसे टाकायच्या ते मात्र कोणाला कळत नव्हतं. भिकारी सुद्धा जे मिळतंय ते पदरात पडून घ्यायचे.

त्या इसमाला खूप कुतूहल वाटून त्याने तिकडच्या एका म्हाताऱ्या भिकारणीला विचारलं,

“आजी ह्या मावशी रोज तुम्हाला भीक म्हणून काहीतरी नाणं देतात. त्या किती उदार आहेत ना. तुम्ही सगळेच रोज त्यांची वाट पाहत असाल नाही का?”

“अहो साहेब काय विचारू नका. त्या जेव्हा पहिल्या वेळी आम्हाला भीक द्यायला आल्या ना तेव्हा आम्ही पण खूप मोठ्या अपेक्षेने त्यांच्याकडे पाहत होतो. पण प्रत्येकाला भीक देताना त्यांनी सर्वांनाच हळू आवाजात एक प्रकारची धमकीच दिली की मी रोज पाच पैशाचे नाणं तुम्हाला देणार आहे. पण तुम्ही हे कोणालाही सांगता कामा नये. गावातील लोकांच्या नजरेत माझी प्रतिमा दयाळू, दानशूर अशीच राहायला हवी. कळलं ना! कोण काय बोलेल त्याला मी गावातून हाकलून देईन. ह्यांच्यापेक्षा सामान्य स्थितीतील लोक आम्हाला व्यवस्थित दानधर्म करतात. म्हणूनच म्हणतात ना “दिसतं तसं नसतं”.”

“खरं आहे आजी स्वतःच्या हौसेखातर वारेमाप पैसा खर्च करतात. गरीबाला द्यायची वेळ येते तेव्हा कळून येतं नाव मोठं लक्षण खोटं. सर्व नुसता दिखावा. ह्याचं पितळ उघडं पाडायला हवं.”
